My First Radish

I FINALLY harvested my first radish!  It was really tiny, but It stopped growing any bigger about a week ago, so I figured its time to pluck that sucker out of the ground.  its been well over two months since I first planted the seeds and many lessons have been learned through this process.

First of all, seed packets give you specific planting instructions for a reason.  If it tells you they do better in cold weather, then they do better in cold weather.  I think this heat wave we’ve been having has stunted the growth of the radishes.  I thought I could coax them to grow even in the summer, but I was wrong.  Next year I’m going to start planting them in February or March.

Secondly, I need to plant them farther apart (this also has to do with the planting instructions).  The packet told me to plant them 4 inches apart, but I decided to try planting them 2 inches apart.  This was a bad idea.  The leaves ended up all tangled together, and I’m sure this affected the ability to get maximum sunlight.

And the other lessons I talked about in previous posts… things like getting enough sunlight, etc.

Anyway, I just want to say that this one radish was delish.  Crispy and refreshing.  I ate it in one bite with butter and sea salt.

And We’re Back – Trivets!!

Wow, its been quite a while since I last posted on the blog.  I’m finally home after back to back vacations so hopefully I’ll be able to get back to regular posting again.

My most recent trip was a family cruise trip to Halifax Nova Scotia and St. John New Brunswick.  Both locations claim to be lobstering towns, but I suspect this may be a tourist trap since they were charging $27 per pound for a lobster.  A couple of years ago, Joe and I traveled to Maine and the lobsters there were significantly less.  Regardless, Halifax was a cute, quaint fishing town.  I really enjoyed soaking in that romantic nautical vibe.

I’m not very big on souvenirs – I feel like they usually just end up as useless clutter – but I did find one on this trip that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional for the home, so I caved in and made the purchase.  We stopped at this little shop by the port which sold all sorts of hand knotted nautical rope items.  They had coasters, wreaths, door stops, and more – all made out of knotted rope.  I ended up buying a trivet which is something we actually really needed at home… plus I’m totally into that nautical look right now.

Oh, also, do you notice an improvement in the quality of my images?  Hubby got me a brand new camera for my birthday!!  Its a Canon S95! =D

Love it!!!

Dreams, Radishes, and Other Minutia

I love my apartment so much.  The other night I had a dream that Joe got a new job in Connecticut and we had to move.  In my dream we were able to afford a luxury condo there because the cost of living is much lower, but I was sooo sad that I had to give up my NY apartment.  When I woke up I felt such a sense of relief that it was all a dream.

In other news, my radishes are doing great!!  I read that they are ready for harvest in three weeks, but it seems like mine are taking closer to two months.  Besides moving them to a sunnier window sill, another thing that helped them thrive is that I lined one side of the pot with aluminum foil to help reflect more sunlight light onto the plants.

Another thing we did recently is change the ceiling light fixture in our kitchen.  We bought a discontinued schoolhouse semi-flushmount light fixture from the Restoration Hardware and Joe installed it himself.  I kept telling him not to since I was afraid he’d get electrocuted, but he reassured me with his engineering background and with the fact that he’s done stuff like this before.  It was actually really easy and he did a great job!
